  • RV and trailer guidance

RVs and camping trailers may be used for beach camping. All camping vehicles and trailers must remain on the open beach, seaward of the dunes. There are no hard surfaced roads or camping pads on the islands. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended for driving on the beach and/or pulling a camping trailer. The maximum size of the trailer or RV depends on if it will fit on the deck of the ferry. The different ferries can handle lengths from 38 to 54 feet. Call and talk directly with the ferry about your RV and/or trailer.

  • Official access warning

During the summer months, drinking water is available at the restrooms near the lighthouse and from a spigot on the back road near the boardwalk to the beach. At the cabin camp, drinking water is available in the public restrooms. These sources of water are turned off during the coldest part of the winter. Keep a clean camp – store all food, and even trash, in sturdy, sealable containers, to prevent raccoons. Follow Leave No Trace principles. There is no trash pickup on the islands, take all trash back to the mainland for disposal. Dump stations are located in Great Island Cabin camp and on the back road near the point of Cape Lookout. Ice and gas sales are through the cabin camp. A public bath house with showers is located in the cabin camp.

Experience & practicality

Two transparent read-time scores. Unknown facts never count for or against a place, and a score is never used as filter evidence.

Experience

Published recreation and setting.

—/ 10

Not enough data. Only 0 relevant facts have been published for this record, so no score is shown rather than an invented one.

Practicality

Published logistics: access, cost, facilities.

6.6/ 10

75% of the 10 published facts are positive, scaled by how much is documented (88% of the 16-weight target). Partial data coverage · 17 still unpublished. A thin record reads low because little is published, not because the place is poor.

Why

  • Camping is published as allowed
  • Restroom
  • Drinking water
  • Cost is published
  • $25 or less per night
  • Maximum vehicle length published

Published as not available

  • Dump station
  • Shower
  • Trash service
  • Laundry

Partially supported: only one of the two dimensions has enough published evidence, so this record is not presented or ranked as the equal of a fully documented one.

Methodology nmr-score-3.0.0. Park-level activities feed Experience only; campsite facts feed Practicality only. Experience measures how much recreation and setting evidence is published; Practicality is the published positive share scaled by how much of the logistics catalogue has been documented, so a handful of positives can no longer read 10/10. Unknown is never treated as a no. Neither dimension is used to filter search results, and “Best” ordering ranks fully supported records above partially supported ones.
